At a recent event at the Global Innovation Exchange (UW) in Bellevue, a student asked me about the difference between working for a large tech corporation vs working at a tech startup. This question intrigued me, and I did not realize new graduates were looking for such a perspective as they look to start their career.
As a general statement, irrespective of company size, company cultures makes a big difference. For instance, when we compare Amazon and Microsoft we see a very different work culture. Amazon still operates with a startup urgency, and employee performance is related to experimentation and significant growth in revenue or efficiency. At Microsoft the culture is that of a more established corporation where employee performance based on ability to sustain existing lines of business, and also demonstrate ability to keep current and also grow in line with competitor offerings.
While I am tempted to write an “essay” on how I compare working at a Blue Chip vs Startup, I think it is easiest for me to communicate my experience via a table.
Check out the table/image below to view how I compare my experience working at a big corporation (Microsoft) vs my experience at the six startups. Feel free to leave feedback as per your experience.
